Dr Lauren Papa is a physician, public speaker, and founder of Heartbeat Heroines, a non-profit that raises awareness and funds for women’s heart health research. Her personal journey in medicine has inspired her to pave the way for more women in the medical field. Lauren’s journey began in her early 20s when she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that resulted in recurrent hospitalizations. She experienced first-hand the disparities in health care during her multiple hospital stays and recognized the lack of diversity in the medical field. Lauren wanted to make a difference and become a doctor to advocate for patients like herself. She enrolled in the Pre-Med program and became the first in her family to attend college.
While in medical school, Lauren realized the underrepresentation of women in cardiology and the urgent need for change. She found a mentor, a female cardiologist, who guided and inspired her to pursue a career in cardiology. After completing her residency and fellowship, Lauren became a cardiologist with the goal of improving women’s heart health Dr Lauren Papa.
As a cardiology fellow, Lauren’s groundbreaking research on gender disparities in heart failure paved the way for future studies and strategies to improve women’s heart health. She founded Heartbeat Heroines to raise awareness, educate, and empower women on heart disease prevention so that they can live healthier and happier lives.
Lauren’s passion for advocacy extends beyond her work at Heartbeat Heroines. She is a board member of several organizations, including WomenHeart, the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease, and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign. She is also a public speaker and a guest on various TV shows, where she spread awareness about heart disease and the importance of diversity in medicine.
